The M16A2 entered service in 1982, after a series of tests. It was initially adopted by the United States Marine Corps in 1983, and later by the United States Army in 1986.
It was an improved version of the M16A1, with modifications such as a barrel with a 1:7 twist, a circular barrel cover, a longer stock, adjustable rear sights and a three-round burst firing mechanism.
These updates, at the request of the soldiers themselves, finally brought the weapon up to the level of its European competitors, paving the way for the development of the future assault rifle par excellence, the M4 A1 (1994).
